Across independent restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and cloud kitchens, recipes typically live scattered across a shared drive, a group chat, and the head chef's memory, with no reliable way to know what a dish costs to plate once ingredient prices move. AITC built Recipe Studio, a self-hosted recipe and costing platform, to close that gap for the market — every recipe written once, costed live against its ingredient library, versioned on every change, and published into six audience-specific documents. Cafe Boh, an independent cafe, is one of the businesses running it today.
Challenge
No single source of truth: Recipes lived across a shared drive, a group chat, and the head chef's memory, with no version anyone could trust and no record of what changed between two versions of the same dish.
Costs never moved with prices: Nobody could say what a dish cost to plate — ingredient prices moved every week, and the cost sheet never moved with them.
One sheet, every audience: The same recipe sheet had to serve the kitchen, a new hire, and the printed menu at once, with no way to hold back the numbers that shouldn't leave the pass.

Discovery & planning
We looked at how recipe and cost data actually moved through independent kitchens — spreadsheets, group chats, memory — and mapped where a single system could replace all three without adding another vendor to depend on.
Solution design
We designed a self-hosted platform built around one recipe record: a pure costing engine, section-level version history, a workspace-defined role builder, and a print engine that turns that one record into six audience-specific documents.
Key functionality delivered
Pure costing engine
Converts weight, volume, and count against a live ingredient library — bridging density and piece-weight, applying yield% for trim loss — so plate cost is always current.
Version history with diffs
"Save & publish" freezes a permanent, human-readable snapshot with section-level diffs, so autosave never overwrites history.
Six audience-gated exports
One recipe becomes six different documents — kitchen, management, customer, training, plain, franchise — each showing only what that audience should see.
Five branded print templates
A business's own logo, colors, and fonts apply automatically across every export, with no manual formatting.
Custom role builder
Unlimited workspace-defined roles across 16 permission codes, checked at the API on every request.
Self-hosted, zero lock-in
One Node process and one SQLite file — the data directory is the entire backup, with no third-party auth or database required.
Delivery approach
We shipped the costing engine and recipe editor first, then layered in versioning, the export system, and the role builder as workspaces started running real menus through it.
